The Best Soul Food in Sacramento

California one of the premier food capitals, and the state is abounding in some of the world’s most gourmet eateries. But sometimes you have to escape the stuffiness of the fine dining scene and kick back to enjoy the pleasures of good ol’ fashioned comfort food. Here is a list of where you can get a taste of the best comfort food of the South, commonly known as “Soul Food,” in Sacramento:

The Cajun WagonThe Cajun Wagon is a food-truck serving authentic, Luisiana-style soul food. This award winning truck is the brainchild of Chef John Finnegan, who uses the freshest ingredients around to cook up a variety of soul food classics for the discerning palate of Sacramento. His food comes highly recommended by Yelp and other peer review sites, and has also been featured in Bon Appetite and Gourmet Magazine. We recommend the Seafood Jambalaya, a hefty rice-based smorgasbord, though if you are looking for something (a little) lighter, try any one of the po’ boys sandwich, a creole style baguette sandwiching anything from fried shrimp to catfish.

Broadway Soul FoodIf you are missing your grandma’s cooking and craving some deep fried delicacies, we suggest you make a beeline for Broadway Soul Food. Here, you can expect home-cooked food and a cosy atmosphere, with specialties like fried fish, smothered steak, pork chops and oxtails, all served with a choice of two classic Cajun side dishes (like collard greens, mac & cheese, yams, red beans & rice, and potato salad). This restaurant is something of  a hidden gem,  but has developed a loyal fan base.

Sandra Dee’s:  Sandra Dee’s is one of those institutions that many locals swear by. Owner and head chef Sandra, who has been cooking since age nine, has brought in her family’s legacy and expertise for soul food cuisine. The restaurant’s exterior is painted with enormous illustrations of iconic African-American musicians and the inside has the look and feel of a classic soul food diner. Dee’s whips up classic soul food dishes: decadent Luisiana Gumbo, Creole Shrimp and all sorts of deep-fried dishes.
