The culinary scene in “The City of Brotherly Love” has gained notoriety in the world for its two most famous items: the Philly soft pretzel and, of course, the Philly cheesesteak. Often imitated around the world, but rarely duplicated , cheesesteaks are more than just a sandwich in the city: they have become a cultural icon.
The below restaurants are serving up some of Philly’s finest:
Pat’s King of Steaks: The home of the original cheesesteak, Pat’s King of Steaks is still owned and operated by the same family that started this phenomenon: the Olivieri family. Pat Olivieri was a South Philadelphia hot dog vendor who one day decided to put beef from the butcher on his grill. A taxicab driver noticed the alluring aroma and asked for his own steak sandwich. The story soon spread and so did the fame of the sandwich. Since then, Pat’s operation has grown from a little hotdog stand to one of the most famous cheesesteak shops in the world. Pat’s is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so no matter what time of day (or night) you get a craving for a Philly cheesesteak, you can satisfy it. 1237 East Passyunk Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19147
John’s Roast Pork: Since 1930, John’s Roast Pork has been serving the Philadelphia community some of the best sandwiches around. Loved by locals and regarded as the home of the original roast pork sandwich, it has also become know for its cheesesteaks. The steak is thinly sliced and seasoned according to an old family recipe. The cheese and onions are folded into the meat while still on the grill so the end result is far more flavorful and cheesy than you could ever imagine.. 14 East Snyder Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19148
Geno’s Steaks: For more than five decades, Geno’s has been serving some of the best cheesesteaks around. Infamously known for its fast service and bright neon lights, when you go here, you better be prepared and know how to order. Geno’s offers three different kinds of cheese: Provolone, American and Cheese Whiz. Expertly seasoned and grilled, Geno’s steak is delicious. There is no indoor dining, but there are tables under canopies on the sidewalk for those who wish to enjoy sandwiches on the premises rather than taking them to go. 1219 South 9th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147
